The Market

During 2014 the USA recorded increased military aircraft sales to $52.6bn and missile sales of $19.9bn, out of a total defence sales figure of $87.3. US defence exports grew by 9.2% in the same period. In 2015 the USA exported $21.1bn in the Aerospace and Defence sector, with demand for US defence systems driven by partner countries seeking modernisation across a full spectrum of capabilities in Asia, the Middle East and Latin America.UK aerospace turnover in 2016 grew to £31.1bn, within which UK aerospace exports were £27bn over the same period, representing almost 90% of the annual turnover. Furthermore, more than half UK aerospace companies are forecasting growth of over 10% in the following 12 months, citing growth in existing business, exports and domestic business as the key factors. The export growth is driven by opportunities in the North America and Middle East markets. However, recent years have seen budget cuts in defence sectors including the sequestration in the USA, which results in a highly competitive market for fewer opportunities. Companies need to diversify and seek new and alternative markets, innovations and exports to stay competitive.
