The latest two Eurofighter Typhoons for the Royal Air Force of Oman (RAFO) have passed through Luqa in Malta and RAF Akrotiri in Cyprus on delivery to the Gulf state. The jets, 215 (NS006, ZR406) and 216 (NS007, ZR407), bring the total RAFO deliveries to date to ten, from an order for 12 aircraft – three twin-seaters and nine single-seaters. The two aircraft had completed their maiden flights on August 22 and September 7 last year, respectively.

The Sultanate of Oman announced its decision to purchase 12 Typhoons along with eight Hawk Mk166 advanced jet trainers in December 2012.

An official rollout of the first Typhoon and Hawk aircraft for the RAFO took place on May 15 last year. The aircraft were formally presented to Omani officials during a ceremony at BAE Systems’ Military Air & Information division at Warton, United Kingdom. More than 100 delegates witnessed the event, including His Excellency Sayyid Badr bin Saud al Busaidi, the Sultanate of Oman’s Minister Responsible for Defence Affairs (MRDA) and the Commander of the RAFO, Air Vice-Marshal Mattar bin Ali bin Mattar Al Obaidani. Afterwards there was a brief flypast of an RAFO Typhoon.

Earlier deliveries

The first two RAFO Typhoons, both two-seat variants, comprising 200 (NT001, ex ZR410) and 201 (NT002, ex ZR411), departed from Warton on June 19 last year for their ferry flight to Oman. Their arrival at Adam Air Base was marked by a formal ceremony on June 21 in the presence of the commander of the RAFO, Air Vice-Marshal Mattar bin Ali bin Mattar Al Obaidani.

Two more jets left Warton on August 7, comprising single-seater 210/ZR401 (NS001) and the last of the three twin-stick aircraft on order, 202/ZR412 (NT003).

An additional pair of Typhoons departed Warton on their delivery flights on October 9 last year. The single-seat aircraft comprised 211/ZR402 (NS002) and 212/ZR403 (NS003).

The next pair of single-seat RAFO Typhoons departed Warton for their delivery flight on November 20. These were aircraft 213/ZR404 (NS004) that had first flown on June 13, and 214/ZR405 (NS005) which first took to the air on July 4.
