January 15: The first of 12 P-3C Orion aircraft purchased by Taiwan has been delivered to Lockheed Martin’s facility in Greenville, South Carolina where it will be overhauled and upgraded prior to delivery.
All 12 P-3Cs have been chosen from stored aircraft at Davis-Monthan Air Force Base in Tucson, Arizona and will be dismantled and transported to Greenville by road.
The second aircraft is already undergoing disassembly and the remaining aircraft will be transported over the next three years. The final aircraft is scheduled to leave Davis-Monthan in June 2013.
Agreement for the supply of the 12 former-US Navy aircraft to Taiwan was reached in December 2007, with the contract for the overhaul and upgrade work awarded to Lockheed Martin on March 13, 2009. The first aircraft is scheduled to be delivered to the Republic of China Naval Aviation Command in 2012, with the work finishing on the project in 2015.
